The Lovelorn Legend of ‘Akaka Falls
A handsome warrior named ‘Akaka in Honomu visited his sweetheart Lehua while his wife was visiting her parents in Hilo. Seeing his wife return unexpectedly, ‘Akaka left Lehua’s by the back door and crossed the gulch to visit his other sweetheart, Maile. His wife caught the scent of her husband and she followed him, calling him to return. ‘Akaka took a shortcut home and contemplated his philandering ways. Full of shame, he fled his hut with and threw himself over the cliff on the top of a bluff. ‘Akaka fell headlong to the valley below and transformed into a waterfall, known today as the 420-foot ‘Akaka Falls. Old timers say on a still night, one can hear the wife still calling for ‘Akaka.
